Day to Day Itinerary

The Adventure Begins – A Steep Forest Climb

  • Elevation: 1,660m to 2,850m (5,450 ft to 9,350 ft)

  • Distance: 11 km / 7 miles

  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

  • Habitat: Montane Forest

Your journey starts with a scenic drive to Umbwe Gate, where your Shafino team completes registration. The trek begins through thick rainforest, alive with the calls of exotic birds and the sight of colobus monkeys. Expect a steep, rugged ascent through ridges and gorges, setting the tone for your epic climb.

Breaking Above the Clouds

  • Elevation: 2,850m to 4,000m (9,350 ft to 13,000 ft)

  • Distance: 6 km / 4 miles

  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

  • Habitat: Moorland / Semi-desert

As you leave the dense forest, you’ll enter moorland, with surreal views of giant lobelias and senecios. Today’s trek is shorter but steep, bringing you to the iconic Barranco Camp beneath the towering Barranco Wall—a legendary sight on Kilimanjaro.

Scaling the Barranco Wall – A True Climber’s Highlight

  • Distance: 5 km / 3 miles

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

After breakfast, tackle the thrilling Barranco Wall—an adventurous climb rewarded with jaw-dropping vistas. Then, enjoy a gentle trek through glacial valleys toward Karanga Camp, where you’ll rest and acclimatize in the alpine desert.

The Calm Before the Climb

Today’s short trek brings you to Barafu Camp, your launching pad for the summit push. After lunch, your guide will provide a detailed briefing for summit night. Rest early, as your ascent to the Roof of Africa begins at midnight.

Summit Day – Reach the Top of Africa

  • Ascent: 4,700m to 5,895m (15,350 ft to 19,341 ft)

  • Descent: 5,895m to 3,090m (10,150 ft)

  • Distance: 6 km up / 13 km down

  • Hiking Time: 6–8 hours ascent / 5–6 hours descent

  • Habitat: Arctic to Alpine Desert

Summit day begins under the stars, with a midnight start. Trek past Stella Point to reach Uhuru Peak—Africa’s highest point—where you’ll savor the sunrise and panoramic views from 5,895 meters. After celebrations and photos, descend carefully back to Barafu for a rest, then continue to Mweka Camp.
